“CHANEL” is a female graffiti writer and She has 26 years old and She´s from Bremen, Germany. She´s very talented; From what I've decided to present a brief interview.
You know about her job and some of her views points, I hope you enjoy it! ...
Where does your "Tag Name"?: When I started with graffiti I tagged "Lady" but then changed into "Chanel" which was inspired by the fashion artist Coco Chanel, a pioneering french woman who does menswear-inspired fashion in the twenties.
¿Cuál es tu crew?; Háblanos un poco más de él: El nombre de mi crew es “Bandit Queens”, pero el crew es algo en lo que no me apoyo mucho, soy una artista e independiente de cualquier crew. Escribo y pinto graffiti con la gente sin importar a qué crew pertenecen. En especial me gusta hacer graffiti con otras mujeres, por ejemplo de Berlín o Hamburgo, porque en mi ciudad natal Bremen no hay muchas chicas haciendo graffiti.
What is your crew?; Tell us a little more about it: My crew name is the Bandit Queens, but the crew thing is something I don´t support much, I´m an artist and independent of any crews, writing with people no matter what crew they belong. I especially like to do graffiti with other girls for example from berlin or hamburg, because in my hometown bremen there are not many girls writing.
En pocas palabras; ¿En qué tiempo? Y ¿Cómo comenzaste a pintar graffiti?: Salgo con graffiteros desde los 15 ó 16 años, así que el graffiti acompañó mi vida temprana. Yo fui a una escuela de arte y comencé a dibujar personajes y letras.
Visité mi primer exposición de graffiti e hice mi primer pieza en el 2002. También pinto Óleo y lienzos con acrílico, lo que significa que estoy haciendo arte desde que era una niña.
I visited my first graffiti jam and did my first piece in 2002.
I also paint oil and acrylic canvases, that means I´m doing art since I was a child.
¿Cómo definirías tu estilo?: Yo diría que mi estilo está en desarrollo y no determinado aún. Aquí en Bremen la mayor parte de los escritores de graffiti tienen el Wild Style en sus letras, inspirados por ejemplo por los artistas New Yorkinos de graffiti. Me gusta probar diferentes estilos y colores, a pesar de que a menudo uso los “femeninos”; Colores como el violeta, el rojo y el rosa :)...
How would you define your style?: I would say my style is still developing and not determined. here in bremen most of the graffiti writers have the wild style in their letters inspired for example by new yorker graffiti artists, I like to try different styles and colours, although i often use the "girly" colours like violet, red, pink... :)
¿Te gusta trabajar con otro tipo de técnicas y materiales?: Como ya he dicho antes, me gusta hacer arte y uso materiales no relacionados al graffiti. Especialmente óleo y acrílico; Me gusta hacer caligrafía con tinta también.
Do you like working with other kinds of techniques and materials?: As I mentioned before I like to do art and use materials not related to graffiti especially oil and acrylic colours. I like to do calligraphy with ink, too.
Hablando de estilos, ¿Crees que hay alguna diferencia entre un graffiti realizado por una mujer al que está hecho por un hombre?: Creo que hay algunas pequeñas diferencias entre los estilos de los escritores de graffiti femenino y masculino. A menudo las chicas usan más el estilo bubble para sus letras, de diferentes colores y temas de personajes. Pero creo que las diferencias en el futuro serán cada vez menos, porque hay más y más chicas haciendo graffiti.
Speaking of styles do you think there is any difference between a graffiti done by a woman who is made by a man?: I think there are some little differences between styles of female and male graffiti writers. Often the girls are using more the bubble style for their letters, different colours and character themes.
But I think the differences will be less and less in future, because there are more and more girls doing graffiti writing.
¿Qué? O ¿Quién ha sido tu influencia en el graffiti?: No puedo recordar que estaba en especial un escritor de graffiti que me inspiró. Yo diría que la vida y el arte a mi alrededor cuando me fui por las calles de diferentes lugares me inspiró.
Yo vivía en Croacia (Al Sur de Europa) por 5 años, donde hice una especie de pausa del graffiti, porque no he tenido la oportunidad de hacer graffiti. Estaba todavía dibujando mucho y compré revistas para seguir lo que estaba pasando.
What or who have been your influences within the graffiti?: I can´t remember there was any special graffiti writer who inspired me, I would say life and art around me when I went down the streets of different places inspired me.
I lived in Croatia (south europe) for 5 years where I did kind of a pause of graffiti because I haven´t got the opportunity to do graffiti. Still I was sketching a lot and bought magazines to follow what was going on.
¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre el graffiti que se está haciendo en todo el mundo y la participación de las mujeres en la escena?: El graffiti es casi reconocido como arte, arte de la calle. Puedes ver graffiti en todo el mundo, no importa si se hace por los hombres o las mujeres. Cuando se habla de arte, el género no es importante.
Artistas de graffiti son más o menos considerados como artistas por la sociedad.
No soy una escritora de trenes o escritora ilegal, así que no estoy demasiado involucrada en esa escena; Pero aprecio la gente que hace eso, especialmente las mujeres. La participación de las graffiteras es sin duda un curso natural de la acción y no debe ser mencionado.
What is your opinion of graffiti is being done around the world and the participation of women in the scene?: Graffiti is almost recognized as art, street art. You can see graffiti all over the world no matter if it´s done by men or women.
When you talk about art, the gender isn´t important.
Graffiti artists are more or less considered as artists by society. I´m not a train writer or a illegal writer, so I´m not involved too much to that scene, but I appreciate people doing that, especially women. The participation of female graffiti writers is definitely a natural course of action and shouldn´t be mentioned at all.
¿Es difícil para una mujer conseguir un lugar y un respeto en una actividad predominada por hombres?: ¡Eso es propio!, Si puedes conseguir un lugar y un respeto en la escena como el graffiti. Si tienes tu objetivo y no es sólo cosa de fama, entonces te das cuenta, y ¿Por qué otros escritores(hombres) no te aceptarán?. Por lo menos tenemos todos los mismos “objetivos”/entusiasmo y deben trabajar juntos para lograrlo.
